  • Spit Buckets (Optional but Recommended): Offering an opaque bucket or container for guests to spit wine into is a professional touch. It allows everyone to taste all the wines without becoming intoxicated. It might feel strange at first, but it’s a standard practice.
  • Palate Cleansers: Simple, neutral-flavored foods like water crackers, plain breadsticks, or slices of baguette are perfect for clearing the palate between wines.

  1. See: Encourage guests to hold the glass by the stem and tilt it against a white background. What color is it? Is it pale straw, deep gold, light ruby, or dark purple?
  2. Swirl: Gently swirl the wine in the glass. This aerates the wine and releases its aromatic compounds.
  3. Smell: This is the most important step! Tell guests to put their nose deep into the glass and take a good sniff. What do they smell? Fruits? Flowers? Spices? Earth? Encourage descriptive words, even if they seem silly. There are no wrong answers.
