It is one the most crucial parts of our endocrine system that is  a network of glands and tissues which produce and release hormones to regulate vital bodily functions. These hormones are essential for the metabolism, growth, reproduction and homeostasis. 

Thyroid System consists of thyroid gland which produces hormones like thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) and Calcitonin which is a hormone regulating calcium levels in the blood. Its function is regulated by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland which produce hormones that stimulate the thyroid to produce these hormones. Your body’s metabolism, growth and development are all dependent on the thyroid system. 

What Happens When Thyroid System Does Not Function Well

So if the thyroid system does not work properly then it will lead to disruption of metabolism, growth, mood, development and oral function. Which would further the health problems depending on whether the thyroid is underactive or overactive. 

Well you may have seen people sometimes gaining huge weight, sluggishness, sensitivity to cold, dry, rough skin, puffy face, depression, memory problems, constipation, muscle weakness and so on. This is sometimes the lead effect of a disrupted thyroid system. Underactive thyroid means hypothyroidism when too little of this hormone is released. The common causes of this defect leads to Hashimoto’s disease (autoimmune disorder), iodine deficiency, thyroid surgery, radiation, medications or congenital defects present at birth.

For a healthy thyroid system you can add food items rich in selenium, iodine, Zinc, Iron, magnesium, antioxidants and nutrients.

Avocados –

These are rich in magnesium and can be eaten raw or by adding a bit of salt, pepper and veggies. It is enriched in fibre, healthy fat, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. It contains fibre which aids digestion and supports gut health helping in keeping a healthy weight.  Each Avocado contains 60mg to 80 mg of  magnesium.
